Students:E6 : : Pieces:Puzzle

To improve vocabulary and strengthen reading comprehension, students have been working to solve word analogies.  The students often say “ I love these…it’s like solving a puzzle.”  We think this idea of pieces of a puzzle just “fitting” together really describes the vibe in our classroom.  Everything just seems to click!

6th Year Movie Night

Keeping with tradition, the 6th year students came together after school to enjoy the movie The Giver.  Students have spent the last few months reading and discussing The Giver, by Lois Lowry in their reading group. Students compare and contrast the book to the movie to further understand the themes, characters, and messages that make this book a classic.

The students of E6 are thankful for the sunshine and nice weather.  Students who play together, stay together.

Thanks Coach Bob for taking us out a little early!!

Collaborative projects really “fit” into our cultural curriculum.  In science, as part of the study of deserts, students learned about camel racing.  Camel racing is a popular sport in countries located near the Sahara Desert.  Students learned not only the cultural tradition of camel racing, but efforts that have been made to make this sport humane.  Students are working with a partner to complete “Life in the Desert” which involves not only science, but math, reading, writing, and art.  Visit our photo galleries to see pictures of our camel racing stem project.

In history, students are using writing lessons to complete informational text and complete a timeline of Nevada.  The timeline starts with Anasazi and we are now learning about mountain men and trappers that explored our state.  Students are using informational text features to highlight important places, people, and events.

Tower of Books Challenge

As the students and teachers worked on their 2022 vision boards, one common goal seemed to really stand out, most of us want to read more books!  So to help keep students and teachers motivated, we started a “Tower of Books” challenge.  Students and teachers are able to color a book spine and stack it on the tower for each book read in 2022.  We are hoping this gives students and teachers a visual reminder of the goals we set for ourselves.  Students often look at the tower to get ideas for what to read next and we often hear students recommending favorite titles to their friends.  Reading books may be more social than one thinks.  We will keep you updated on our progress.

Thanks to all students, parents, teachers, and staff who love and support E6.  Our puzzle would not be complete without you.

Ringing in 2022!

“Ringing” in 2022 with a celebration!!

We started the new year with many reasons to celebrate.  Ms. Taylor sent the kids searching for clues to announce her engagement.  She has been waiting all

winter break to share her happiness with the students. The students were full of enthusiasm and well wishes. Congratulations, Ms. Taylor!

Inspirational t-shirts remind us to celebrate our accomplishments.  Albert Einstein states, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” and our students demonstrate their “intelligence” and “adaptability” everyday.

E6 also took some time to celebrate Ms. Rachel and thank her for the gift of music.  E6 students completed a collaborative project to remind Ms. Rachel of the mark she left on our school.  We wish her and her family all the best as they embark on a new adventure in Florida.

Vision Boards 2022

Students spend the first two weeks of the year completing personal vision boards.  Students brainstormed “visions” of what they want to accomplish and what they “see” themselves doing in the upcoming year.  We used personal art, magazine images, inspirational quotes, and personal goals to create boards that motivate all of us to stay curious and connected.  Once the vision boards are completed, they will be hung in the classroom as a reminder of the hopes we have for the upcoming year.

We are so grateful.

The teachers of E6 would like to thank all of our students and families for the generous holiday gifts and the continued support during these challenging times.  We seem to always get a generous gift of hot coffee on just the day we need a little “pick-me-up”.  Our “vision” for your children is to help them remain curious, healthy, and happy.  Best wishes to all of you in 2022.

The Most Important Thing About E6

The “Most Important Thing” about E6

is that we are together.

Kids huddled together around open notebooks and scattered papers, searching for “super fascinating” facts.  Collecting, organizing, and distributing food to those who are facing difficult times.  Classroom leaders present a festive tradition that reminds us to be grateful for one another.  The most important thing about E6 is that we are together.

The most important thing about E6 is that we are creative.

Pouches of markers, colored pencils, and gel pens are taking up all the extra space on our shelves and desks.  Open any notebook and you will find pages filled with color coded notes, small sketches, and images to help the information “stick”.  Holiday tessellations turn into beautiful holiday cards.  The most important thing about E6 is that we are creative.

The most important thing about E6 is that we are curious.

Sometimes we raise our hands to ask a question or sometimes the questions are just blurted out, but there really is not such thing as a “dumb” questions.  The questions remind us that connections are being made and our brains are growing.   Rainforest creatures, the Anasazi, venn diagrams, and book club discussions inspire questions and investigations for answers.  The most important thing about E6 is that we are curious.

The most important thing about E6 is our families and our friends.

Learning, laughing, and working together is what makes this classroom so special.  Patience, kindness, and understanding is what makes navigating difficult situations easier.  Reminding ourselves everyday that with the love and support of students, parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, pets, teachers, administrators, and friends that anything is possible.  The most important things about E6 are our families and friends.

E6 would like to wish everyone a happy and safe winter break.  Looking forward to seeing all of you in 2022!

November- A Welcome Change

Saying goodbye to a “colorful” October, and welcoming the cooler days of November.  Where did the time go?

We always say to the kids, “time flies when you’re having fun”, well October must have been a blast because the days just flew by.  The students and teachers of E6 were busy learning the states and capitals, completing state research projects, writing fantasy stories, and studying the difference between taiga and tundra or deciduous and coniferous biomes.  We also spent days meeting in reading groups and enjoying our first ever class audio book.  Whew… I am so proud to say we made it!!

Thank you to all the students, teachers, parents, grandparents, and friends who helped make this past month and our “Celebrate America Day” so successful.  Our “50 State Breakfast” and “1st Annual E6 Geography Bee” was a huge success.  Please visit our photo galleries to witness all of your students’ hard work.

We are all EGGSPERTS!  We have a new game in class and the students and teachers are loving it.  Wireless “eggs” or buttons are given to the students and when a question is asked the student can press the button to light up the coordinating color at the front of the classroom.  We are able to ask hundreds of questions and every child gets a chance to answer and review cultural material.  Engagement has skyrocketed!

Hooked!

A great fantasy story starts with a sentence that grabs the attention of the reader.  As we prepare for our publishing party students have been editing their writing pieces to include word choice that prepares the reader for an experience.

“It all started at the beach when Riptide disappeared.” – Saagar

“As I climb out of bed I watch a feather fall onto the hardwood floor. It quietly graces my foot.” – Vivi K.

“She sat up. She blinked.  This time, she didn’t fall asleep. Oh, how I hate Monday mornings – the weekend never seems to last long enough.” – Amber

“Serina was working in the fields of Pennsylvania when all of the sudden a hole opened up in the ground and sucked Serina down.”

Pine Cone Discoveries

Check out the photos of students investigating what can be found in a pine cone.  As part of our study of the coniferous forest, students open pinecones to understand how pinecones protect their seeds from variations in the environment.

The study of deciduous forests starts today.

We hope all of you are enjoying the cooler weather and the beautiful Nevada fall.  Thank you for your continued support of E6.🍁

Welcome to the Tundra…

Ms. Taylor often starts the lesson with, “this is super fascinating”, and kids often respond with, “you say that about everything”.  It’s true, however, everything in science is super fascinating!  This past week E6 has spent time learning about life in the tundra.

Permafrost jello helped students understand how the ground stays permanently frozen, not allowing for large trees and shrubs to grow since water and ice remain close to the surface.  Children also covered their hands in “blubber” and submerged their “polar bear paws” into icy cold water to understand how animals stay warm in cold climates.

Students are hard at work as they start to build their state floats in preparation for “Celebrate America Day”.  Each student will make their own float that highlights and celebrates their state.  Students will build 3D models of state buildings, landmarks, parks, state symbols and points of interest.  Students are working with Ms. Angela in art to understand 3D modeling as well as using class time to research their design ideas.  We will continue to add pictures that show a timeline of their progress.  This week the main focus was on adding their wheels!

Parent Conferences

It was so nice to meet with all the parents this past week.  We look forward to the day when we can talk in person about the hard work and success of your children.  We miss seeing you all on campus, so we will continue to post pictures of your students and their work in our photo galleries.  The teachers of E6 would like to thank you again for your patience and continued support.  ❤
