E6 is on a Roll!

We are off and running!  We launched our reading week with a book tasting at the “Bestseller Beach Cafe”, we “revved” up our writing with poetry, and “fired-up” grammar with the introduction of noREDink.  It has been a month of activities and lessons that focus on language arts.  We will start September with our “Week of Inspirational Math”.

Bestseller Beach Cafe

Students spent Monday morning at the cafe tasting books from all different genres.  Students were able to pick a favorite book and have started each morning with silent reading.  Reading is a great way to calm down and cool off before classwork begins.

Students spent the week learning reading strategies to enhance critical thinking and comprehension. Ask your student to explain “metacognition” and the importance of “real” reading.

READING WEEK

Book clubs are meeting,

Kids are reading,

Write on E6!

Creativity shined as students played with poetry.  We borrowed words from mentor poets, we rhymed like Dr. Suess, and “found” poetry in our everyday work.  Click on the link to see some examples of student’s “black out” poetry.

What if you raise

Your voice,

And dance along

While you sang.

Then everything went silent.

Hush,.

Wake up and start your day.

-An E6 student

Stay True

Raise your spunk

Dance your heart

Find the voices

Hush.

There will sometimes be many voices.

But don’t twist and turn.

Just stay true to your heart.

-an E6 student

I simply had to gawk,

At the young boy stacking socks.

His name was Knox.

He had chicken pox.

I gave him some rocks,

He gave me some box-locks.

What a strange child was little Knox.

Introducing noREDink

Students had the opportunity to set up accounts on noRedink, a grammar program that allows students to generate a profile with personal preferences that will be used in assignments, have your kids show you!  Students love seeing their names in print.

E6 Welcomes You!

There is so much going on …“Behind the Mask”

Our temperatures are normal, our hands are sanitized, we are standing apart, and yet there are smiles coming from behind those masks.  We are off to a great start!  Children spent the first week of school reacquainting with old friends and meeting new ones.  Children entered the classroom with grace and curiosity and spent time just enjoying one another’s company.

Every year we start with self portraits.  Self portraits are a way for students to get to know one another and to highlight individuality and discover common interests..  Students drew a caricature of themselves wearing their masks.  With a clever release of the paper, the mask is dropped and personalities are revealed.

Students described themselves as creative, athletic, caring, intelligent, thoughtful, and humorous.  They drew pictures of activities, foods, movies, books and hobbies.  We often find the kids studying the pictures as they work throughout the day.  Their masks can’t hide their excitement, curiosity, and laughter.  With such a positive start, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings.

E6 Welcomes Tradition

Every year 6th year students help teach the great lessons. The “great” lessons are an opportunity for students to create impressionistic lessons and participate in the art of storytelling.  Students tell the story of the “Birth of the Universe” while using scientific experiments to demonstrate theories.

The second great lesson, “The Timeline of LIfe”, exposes children to the theory of adaptation and how life changed over long periods of time.  Students created their own personal time capsule and at the end of the how we will discover how much they have grown and changed over time.

Students met “Lucy” during the third great lessons, “The Coming of Man.”  We spent time seeing how we measure up!  Ask your kids how they felt peeling an orange without using their thumbs.

The “History of Writing” and “The History of Math”  will be coming in the next few weeks as we launch our writer’s workshop and week of inspirational math.

E6 Welcomes Responsibility

Assigning jobs is always a tough decision but your students put forth their best effort.  Reading their applications and recommendations is a fun way for us to get to know all of you, especially when we don’t get to see you as often on campus.

Our shoes are straightened, the tables are scrubbed, the floors are swept, and our room is tidy and organized (most of the time).  Students take their responsibilities seriously and we appreciate their efforts.

With a new year, and new responsibilities, came a new class pet.  Chimichanga aka “Chimi”, our class chinchilla, has arrived and is enjoying his new home.  He gets lots of fresh carrots and hay and finds time to take a nap while the children are working.  Chimi can sleep through anything.  Romeo, our desert tortoise, has also returned and spends his day digging down in the dirt to escape the hot temperatures.  We keep it busy!

We are thankful for all of your kind words and support.  We are grateful to the FMS administration and staff for making this year possible, and we are so happy to spend the day with such amazing kids.
